What is Precision & Recall?

Precision = of items you flagged, how many were correct. Recall = of all correct items, how many did you find. They trade off: catching every spam email (high recall) means more false alarms (low precision). F1 score is their harmonic mean. Use precision when false positives are costly, recall when false negatives are costly.
